John F. Griffith

Mr. Griffith focuses on counseling clients in strategic development of their intellectual property assets, including patent preparation and domestic and international prosecution. Mr. Griffith has prosecuted both ex parte and inter partes reexamination applications, and he has experience with the patent reissue process. Mr. Griffith also has expertise counseling clients as to offensive and defensive patent strategies, including detailed analysis of patent infringement, validity, and enforceability issues.

Mr. Griffith has helped clients develop patent portfolios in a wide variety of electrical and electronics-related fields, including computer architecture, networking, discrete and integrated electronic circuitry, semiconductor design, flat panel displays, computer software and object-oriented design, database software, speech and language processing, image and video compression, wireless communications, and Internet-related systems.

Mr. Griffith has served as a faculty member for the Practising Law Institute (PLI) seminar, “Fundamentals of Patent Prosecution.” He is an author of several papers, including “Intellectual Property in Government Contracts: Avoiding the Loss of IP Rights to the Government” (PLI 2002), and “Projected Subset Least Squares Method for Robust Linear Prediction of Speech” (IEEE 12th International Conference on Pattern Recognition 1994). Mr. Griffith is a member of the Bay Area IP Inn of Court, San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. When earning his B.S.E.E. at Purdue University, Mr. Griffith was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies.

Before joining Weaver Austin Villeneuve & Sampson LLP, Mr. Griffith was an associate with Mayer Brown LLP. Mr. Griffith is a member of the California State Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
