Patent Agents, Engineers & Scientists
WAVS IP provides a respectful and supportive work environment for patent agents, who are viewed as the professional peers of our attorneys.
For example, WAVS IP provides the same general compensation scheme for patent agents as for associates. Moreover, most of the work assignments available to attorneys are also available to patent agents. At a very early stage in their careers, WAVS IP patent agents have direct contact with clients, including in-house counsel and inventors. Due to this supportive environment, our patent agents have been responsible for some of the most significant client development in the history of our firm.
Every new patent agent or engineer is assigned a mentor who is responsible for initial work assignments and early professional development. Aside from day-to-day training received from partners and senior practitioners, the firm provides training sessions during lunch on Mondays for new patent agents and engineers, as well as more advanced presentations during lunch on Thursdays. In addition, the firm supports attendance at outside seminars pertaining to intellectual property and technology law topics.
Although WAVS IP generally expects non-attorney practitioners to have a Patent Bar registration number before joining the firm, the partnership may waive this requirement in exceptional cases. The firm is supportive to patent agents who desire to attend law school while employed at the firm. Reduced work requirements and financial assistance can be extended to patent agents while attending law school.
Although agents and engineers are not eligible for partnership, they can still play a vital role in the client development and the management of the firm. Patent agent compensation will continue to increase commensurate with experience and efficiency.
